At D&B Tile, we sell porcelain tile in Palm Beach and throughout the rest of South Florida. This means we often speak with people who are surprised by just how much versatility this material has. Today, we wanted to cover some of the major categories of finishes that porcelain and ceramic tiles have.
Atlas Concorde’s marketing director recently outlined these in a talk he gave at Coverings 2022, “Atlas Concorde: All the Beauty of Porcelain.”
What Is a Finish?
Finishes can completely transform the look of a tile, giving it a different texture or polish. This is why it’s important to consider the major kinds of finishes when deciding which tile is right for an area.
What Kinds of Finishes Are Available?
Glossy
Glossy tiles are popular, and it’s not hard to see why. They have a shiny, reflective appearance, which can help a space feel bigger and more impressive. Porcelain’s durability means you don’t have to worry about scratches or stains, either.
You can get the beauty and luxury of glass, without having to worry about the upkeep. Here are some examples of polished & high gloss tile.
Matte
Matte tile has a finish that doesn’t have any shine. Homeowners tend to choose this in areas where they want a sophisticated, restrained look. Matte finishes are highly slip-resistant, which makes them popular in bathrooms and other areas that experience excess water.
They’re also great if you have pets or kids. Here are some examples of matte tile.
Silk
Silk tiles are designed to combine the best of both glossy tiles and matte tiles. While they reflect more light than matte tiles, they reflect less of it than gloss. For this reason, they’re a good fit for homeowners who want a more subtle, neutral look.
Here’s one of the silk tiles offered by Atlas Concorde, one of our wonderful suppliers.
Textured
Textured tiles can completely define a room, drawing the eye with unusual patterns. These finishes tend to be most popular on walls, which can highlight the tactile nature of the tile. There are a variety of textures available, though typically they’re rougher than other finishes.
Here are some examples of textured tiles.
Other Considerations to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Finish for Your Tile
While these are the most popular finishes for tiles, there are all kinds of wonders that we haven’t even outlined here. For instance, glaze can have a variety of different designs printed onto it. This is why it’s possible for us to offer so many tiles that look like other materials, including:
- Wood
- Marble
- Stone
